Karting Tips - So, You Want to WIN?

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

So, you want to WIN?

Couple of top tips when racing. Learn to look “through” the kart that is close in front and “look” at the track instead. This keeps you driving at maximum speed and stops you following the guy in front straight into his accident should he make a mistake! If the kart in front spins DO NOT WATCH IT! You will simply spin with him. Finally, always, always, always go round the back of a spinning kart. If you try to turn inside him he will hit you!

So you want to win the event? You are going to have to get in the final first! The way to do this is score points, and the way to do this is to finish as far up as possible in each race! You are going to need to overtake at least 1 kart, maybe 2 karts on average in each race. So crashing trying to go past a third kart and thus finishing last is not a good idea. If you luck a load of overtakes when some people mess up, bank them. Be calm, wait the whole race if necessary to safely overtake the odd kart. Crashing and coming back having dropped two or three places is not good!

Karting Tips - Go Again!

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Go again!

You will never stop learning how to drive a track. A race track is a living thing. Its lap times can vary throughout a day and will vary wildly though a year due to track temperatures and tyre rubber. The way to maximise the kart performance can change EVERY lap you drive! You will race many times before you learn the tricks of the track and where and how to overtake. Each time you race you can use this knowledge to get yourself further up the finishing results!

Winter Karting - Part 2

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Cold-Weather Racing Tips

Something people often overlook is that the way a kart works in the cold winter months is quite different to a hot summer day. A skilful driver will adapt to the reduced grip by being more sympathetic to the tyres, keeping them within their grip limits and allowing them to warm up during the race. Being smoother will allow the tyre to load up and flex, increasing the rate it which it warms. Sliding a kart wildly across the track does not heat the tyres as well. You will pass that guy later in the race when your tyres are working better and his are not!

You would think that the reduced grip in cold weather would mean that you need not use the brake since the speeds are slower. Very wrong! You need to be much more precise with corner entry speeds since you don't have the grip reserves to help you out. Many corners that would be easily flat out in warm weather become corners that need a dab of brake or a lift of the throttle to negotiate at the limit when it's colder. The guy in front who didn't do this is already wrestling with the wheel, sliding through the exit and giving up speed. Use your better corner exit speed to overtake him before the next corner!

Winter Karting

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Cold-Weather Racing Tips

Well winter has arrived and it's gone cold. Time to go Karting! Wrap up in warm clothing and wear a pair of gloves when driving. The karts will also be feeling the cold, the tyres will be operating well below optimum temperature and the kart will slide and squirm in the corners. Harsh use of the throttle and pedal will make the kart slide and steal away some of your speed. Be smooth with the steering on entry to the corner and squeeze gently on the throttle and brake pedals.

Remember a sliding kart is a slow kart! Armfuls of understeer and oversteer may make you think you are "right out there" at the limit but the fact is you are way past the limit of performance the tyres can provide and you are simply throwing away your speed! When it's cold, the tyres will not provide the grip that they do on a nice summer day. You need to work with them a bit. Be smooth with the throttle, brake and steering. Take less speed into the corner; avoid the kart sliding mid corner.

Why Electric Karts?

Why does Teamworks Karting use electric karts? Everyone else uses much cheaper petrol or LPG karts, so why does Teamworks Karting pioneer the use of electrics?

Quite simply, electric karts are faster, cleaner, and more fun!

Teamworks Karting Looks Forward to its First Cadet Grand Prix

Following the success of our Cadet Clubs, the last two months have seen our young drivers showcasing their existing skills and learning new ones in order to achieve their very own Teamworks Karting Race License.  Under the tuition of Race Directors Chris Twitchen and Joshua Poolton and ably assisted by our experienced track marshals, the best performing young drivers have been completing their licenses, enabling them to compete on an even grander scale in our first Cadet Club Grand Prix events.

Our new Cadet Grand Prix events are strictly for under 16's who have shown in previous cadet clubs that they have all the qualities of budding go kart champions.  The first events are on Sunday 14th November.

If you're under 16 and would like to participate in these new competitive events, look out for the cadet club listings on our web site or contact us on 0845 180 3020

Karting Tips - Racing

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Racing

Never look behind when you are racing! Everything behind you is history! By twisting to look back you are probably going to drive toward a barrier and slow yourself down. If you are thinking about the people behind you are not concentrating on what’s in front! Finally, it gives them encouragement since they know you are worried about them and distracted!

I always give three words of advise to novice racers. Concentrate, concentrate and concentrate! The race lasts from the lights to the flag, and in between you should be using every ounce of concentration to maximise the performance of the kart, get past the people in front and keep the ones behind firmly where they should be! Dont wave to your mates, never celebrate overtaking manoeuvres, don’t get angry of you get overtaken or make a mistake. These just waste concentration. Finally, never rehearse your victory speech until you have actually crossed the winning line!

Price Changes

Teamworks Karting has held its prices steady since January 2007, but inevitably prices have to rise in line with increasing supplier costs.  Prices have today risen by an average of £1.95 per person, although some events have been reduced: Cadet Club and Cadet Grand Prix events are now just £26.95 if booked online.

This is the first time prices have risen at Teamworks Karting for nearly 4 years, and prices will remain fixed in 2011 despite the forthcoming rise in VAT.

You can save an extra £5 per driver on all of our event formats by booking online: For full details and online booking visit our online events calendar.

Karting Tips - Overtaking

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Overtaking

People think that they should always be able to overtake. If it was easy I’d be on television every weekend driving an F1 car! The simple overlooked fact is that you need to be faster than the person in front at some point on the track. If you are much faster you will get past easily. If you are close on speed then you will need to work at it. The best way to slow the person in front down is to make him defend. He will take a slower line to block you if he thinks you might pass him, leaving you a faster line out of the corner and now you are suddenly much faster than him and able to breeze past. You may need to do this for several corners before finally outfoxing him. Be sure to wave as you go past!

OK are you going to simply drive past on the straight, go round someone in the corner or outbrake them when you arrive at a corner. Without a magic wand you are going to have to do one of these if you are going to pass the kart in front. The first is easiest but you will need to be faster through the corner onto the straight to make it work. Going round someone in a corner only works if they are really slow; it’s normally step one on the way to the scene of your accident! Outbraking is the easiest but you must be very close since braking distances in karting are short.

Karting Tips - Race Start

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Race Start

Well the famous saying is that you can’t win the race at the first corner, but you can certainly lose it! Whilst it may be a great chance to overtake a few people it’s also your best chance of getting parked in a barrier! Have a plan. Decide which side of the track you would like to be on approaching the corner. Watch other races and see where the traffic queue forms to get round. See where people are spinning or getting slowed by contact. Then in your race position yourself, brake a little earlier and pick your way past the people making a mess of things. Job done...

Karting Tips - Practice Time!

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Practice Time!

You know it never ceases to amaze me how many times people crash in practice, often on the first lap! You need to learn which way each corner turns, how wide they are, where to brake and which line to use before you can get anywhere near a competitive lap time. Even Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton can't break any track record on their first lap. Use the time to practice and learn the track, not waste it finding out how good the marshals are at pulling you out of the barrier!

Karting tips - Steering

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Steering

Lots of people come karting after playing racing games on their Playstation and think that all you have to do is turn the wheel to get round the corner. If only it was that simple! The steering on a kart is very direct, which means that only a very small turn of the wheel results in a big change of direction. You have to learn to be precise. Also, whenever you are tunring the wheel you are using power to turn (due to tyre grip) and thus losing speed., thus learn to minimise your steering inputs. Finally, as you turn the wheel the grip builds up in the front wheels to turn the kart. If you turn the wheel too quickly the front wheels will lose grip and you will run wide in the corner! Watch a very quick driver and you will notice that he hardly ever seems to turn the wheel. He has learnt all these lessons!

Karting Tips - Braking

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Braking

Using the brakes in a kart is one of the most tricky things to perfect. The brakes on a kart are only on the back axle. This has two negative effects. Firstly, the harder you brake, the more the weight transfers onto the front of the kart, and the less there is on the rear. So the harder you brake, the less grip you have! This makes it easy to lock the back axle. Secondly, the brake force will seriously upset the handling, making the back of the kart slide wildly if you try to brake hard in a corner. So brake smoothly to avoid locking and brake in a straight line before the corner to avoid sliding!

Karting Tips - The Driving Line

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

The driving line

Lots of people talk about it without knowing what it is! A kart is going to accelerate the best and reach its top speed in a straight line. Sliding, turning or spinning the wheels loses power and slows you down. The best line around the track is therefore the straightest. Approach the corner from the edge of the track, turn smoothly through the middle of the corner, and from there steer gently back towards the outside again. Simple!

Karting Tips - Sitting in the Kart

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Sitting in the kart

It’s really important to sit correctly. When you are driving around your brain is continually getting messages about what the kart is doing (turning, sliding, accelerating and braking) and your eyes are always looking for where you are driving towards. To control all these movements you are going to be moving your arms and legs, almost without thinking. So that you always use the same movements, and keep your centre of gravity always in the same position, sit correctly and consistently in each kart. Sit right back in the seat, shoulder blades against the seat. Hold the wheel comfortably with both hands and your arms slightly bent. Legs should still be bent even when you push down on both pedals. Now you’re set to win!

Karting Tips - Taking Care of Yourself

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Take Care of Yourself!

Wear a crash helmet that fits, not the one with the racy colours! It should slip comfortably over your ears, fit snugly to your cheeks but not feel too tight. Give your head a shake, the helmet should not wobble of feel loose. Finally, do up the chin strap and when you move away in the kart, drop the visor down to protect your eyes. You can normally leave a little gap at the bottom of the visor so that you don’t steam up!

How to organise the perfect stag/hen karting night

Organising a stag/hen party can be tricky, especially if you've got a big group. We organise over 3,000 parties a year, and here are our top tips:
  • Have your race event first thing in the day, to ensure your party guests are still sober!
  • It pays to plan ahead. Save £££ by booking in advance. Book online for the best pricing.
  • Meet at the venue (not at someone's house) to reduce travelling and ensure everyone knows where to go.
  • It's your big day, so pick the best venue. Shop around. Think about safety, reliability, weather and proximity to local bars/clubs.
  • Delegate as much as you can! Use the circuit's event co-ordinators to get special rates for hotels, limos and champagne.

Want to WIN when you go karting?

Want to WIN when you go karting? Here are our favourite tips for setting the fastest lap time:
  • Be smooth - sudden movement upsets the kart's balance; smoothness maximises grip
  • Brake in a straight line
  • Slow in, fast out - maximise your exit speed, not your entry speed
  • Use all the track width - use as little steering as possible to get round the corner
  • Overtake cleanly - stay cool & focused, ready to pounce
