Karting Tips - Braking

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

Braking

Using the brakes in a kart is one of the most tricky things to perfect. The brakes on a kart are only on the back axle. This has two negative effects. Firstly, the harder you brake, the more the weight transfers onto the front of the kart, and the less there is on the rear. So the harder you brake, the less grip you have! This makes it easy to lock the back axle. Secondly, the brake force will seriously upset the handling, making the back of the kart slide wildly if you try to brake hard in a corner. So brake smoothly to avoid locking and brake in a straight line before the corner to avoid sliding!

Karting Tips - The Driving Line

Kart racing tips from our senior Race Director, Ian Seager

The driving line

Lots of people talk about it without knowing what it is! A kart is going to accelerate the best and reach its top speed in a straight line. Sliding, turning or spinning the wheels loses power and slows you down. The best line around the track is therefore the straightest. Approach the corner from the edge of the track, turn smoothly through the middle of the corner, and from there steer gently back towards the outside again. Simple!
